1. What is Verb Concord?

Verb Concord (Subject-Verb Agreement) means the verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural) and person (first/second/third).

2. Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement

  • Singular subject → singular verb. Example: She reads a book.
  • Plural subject → plural verb. Example: They read books.
  • Subjects joined by ‘and’ usually take plural verbs. Example: John and Mary are friends.
  • Subjects joined by ‘or’ / ‘either…or’ → verb agrees with nearest subject. Example: Either he or they are coming.
  • Collective nouns (team, family) → usually singular verb. Example: The team wins the match.
  • Indefinite pronouns (everyone, each, nobody) → singular verb. Example: Everyone is happy.
