1. What is Verb Concord?
Verb Concord (Subject-Verb Agreement) means the verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural) and person (first/second/third).
2. Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement
- Singular subject → singular verb. Example: She reads a book.
- Plural subject → plural verb. Example: They read books.
- Subjects joined by ‘and’ usually take plural verbs. Example: John and Mary are friends.
- Subjects joined by ‘or’ / ‘either…or’ → verb agrees with nearest subject. Example: Either he or they are coming.
- Collective nouns (team, family) → usually singular verb. Example: The team wins the match.
- Indefinite pronouns (everyone, each, nobody) → singular verb. Example: Everyone is happy.
- Expressions like ‘as well as’, ‘along with’, ‘together with’ → ignore second noun. Example: The teacher, along with the students, is present.
3. Examples

- Plural: The cats run fast.
- Compound: My brother and sister are coming.
- Or/either: Either the boy or the girls are late.
