📘 Narration Rules & Uses

1. What is Direct Speech?

Direct Speech is when we report the exact words spoken by someone using quotation marks.

  • Example: She said, “I am reading a book.”

2. What is Indirect Speech?

Indirect Speech is when we report the meaning of what someone said without quoting exactly.

  • Example: She said that she was reading a book.

3. Rules for Changing Direct to Indirect

  • Remove quotation marks and change pronouns accordingly.
  • Shift the tense back one step if the reporting verb is in the past.
  • Change time/place words if necessary (today → that day, here → there).
  • Add “that” after the reporting verb (optional for yes/no questions).
  • Questions: change word order and remove question mark in indirect speech.

4. Examples for Practice

  • Direct: He said, “I am happy.” → Indirect: He said that he was happy.
  • Direct: She said, “I will come tomorrow.” → Indirect: She said that she would come the next day.
  • Direct: “Where are you going?” he asked. → Indirect: He asked where I was going.
